News Technology from My Perspective

OK, so let me get this out of the way up front. I am a firm beleiver in newspapers. As much as I am about broadcast and online media outlets. If you get down to the nitty gritty, it's still about two things. Content. And how you deliver the content you create.
I have been a proponent for several years about creating media-neutral content. Journalists must be able to write for a single platform on a given topic and let someone else worry about where the business can make money from that content. In the long run, the money will always follow whomever has the best content - as long as they can deliver it in a manner where it can be found.
I will go down the path of my view on Journalism at another time as my purpose here is more on Technology, and not a prima donna role that seems to have been granted to a select few who have not come to grasp with the fact that first and foremost, they are a manufacturer of a good that is to be sold for profit. News companies make money from Advertising. News attracts readers and readers are what Advertisers need to market product. Advertisers can exist without news. News cannot exist without Advertisers.
And to get back to the topic, News cannot exist without Technology in today's media world. In a media business, Technology is usually the last one invited to the party and the first one to take the blame. When was the last time you heard someone say publically that the problem was that "the journalist could not get the job done in the time allotted?" As opposed to "a technical problem blah blah blah?"
I am attending the national newspaper technology conference in Washington D.C., this week and besides the poor turnout from the newspaper industry, the vendors are stepping up with the tools to push the Press into the next chapter of media content delivery.   Look back here in a day or so for a complete overview of what's now and where is next.

Let's start with a business assessment and a few sample questions that we will ask as part of the Business Tech Check.
